I was thinking about the mothers, since it's Mothering Sunday this week, and specifically the ones I've written about. I thought I needed a definitive table of my favourites. I've been more on the Disney side of the fence - killing off a parent or not involving them too deeply into their children's affairs, because when they do, they turn out like Rose Duncan. Eek. There are probably two more I'd need to add to the list, but I can't because spoilers! In any case, here are my seven preciouses!
- Ella Harrison; Verde Bianco Rosso. She’s solidly a badass who would do anything for her baby boy Rufus. She only wants the best for him and I admire her so much for that.
- Eva Mensah; Angel’s Baby. Even though she acknowledges motherhood is not her bag, she risks her veritable sanity to keep her son safe. Being a mum and losing your mind seem to go hand in hand. Got to give her props for protecting her baby from more demons.
- Stella Strom; Coming Around Again. She’s hard as nails right to the core. You have to be to dump your sick child on your ex-husband to go to a business meeting. The fortress of Stella only permits her children, naughty and cheeky as they are. But they get that from their mum. She gets called a superhero throughout, as an insult and a compliment because she is ridiculously, inhumanly strong. I seriously adore her.
- Iron Macclellan; Wynne's Surprise. She brought up the beautiful Bren Macclellan! She's a Scot, so immediately inspired by my late godmother. Bren wouldn't be as respectful and caring and loving to Wynne if he hadn't been taught by Iron to do so. I can only love her for that.
- Rose Duncan; Kissing the Canvas. I know. I know! But Rose is freaking wild! The over protective mother that will take any and every decision out of her child’s hand to make sure it’s the right one. She's obviously going about things the wrong way, and really, really wrong but some mothers only gun so hard because they want their children to be happy. Deep down, that's all Rose wants for her daughter.
- Rhoda Nelson; An Art To It. In complete contradiction to Rose, Rhona trusts her teenage daughter enough to make sensible decisions. That trust is so rewarded. Plus Rhoda has a dream of a wardrobe, for Patricia to habitually raid. It's the type of teen/mother relationship that a woman can only hope to have with her child.
- Belinda Afriyie; Windows/A Life Sublime/Verde Bianco Rosso. Just to show that being a mother doesn’t have to be set in biology but in love. Belinda falls in motherly love with Gina and then sweeps Paul and Nick and Sofia under her clucking and Fanti insulting wing. And for that Belinda with all her teeth kissing and yeffun’s is probably my favourite. Don’t tell anyone.
